The SA80 Sights Section

I am actually quite suprised at the variants of SUSAT I have found and that there is quite a number of sights that actually fit despite the SA80 sight rail being of a completely different profile to all other rails in service. I am thinking the original idea for this was so that the SUSAT would not fit on anything else and so there would be no point pinching one for your hunting rifle should there ever be a soldier who would ever dream of even pinching a piece of kit from the Army.

Original SUSAT dated 1976 with provision for grenade sight on the side.

Data plate on above sight. RARDE is the Royal Armament Research and Development Establishment.

Original SUSAT base.

An X numbered trials SUSAT from 1983.

A super rare SUSAT with crosshair reticle.

A SAWES mount for battlefield simulation equipment.

Iron sights and a range adaptor im told is used by cadets.

A regular SUSAT with an Istec aluminium base. Theres several places where this base has been used. The Police have used it on their H+K MP5s, I have seen one on an Istec double GPMG mount also. Notice the SUSAT thumbnut has been clipped so as not to interfere with the TRILUX knob.

Current configuration SUSAT.

View through the current SUSAT.

A full range of covers for the SUSAT are available. The bottom toggled version is the original.

Night Vision.

5000 ACOGs were purchased from Trijicon in America and are in use in Afghanistan as we speak but a contract has just been signed for a new sight. More here later.

A special bracket was produced to fit the IWS ( Based on the American PVS 2 of Vietnam fame ) and I can still hear the voices of those who picked this lot up for the first time ! Its almost unusable.

Ahh ! Thats better. The Pilkington KITE or Common Weapons Sight. Much lighter and no need for bulky mounts. Takes 2 regular AA batteries and the reticle can be turned off for observation only role.

The Oerlikon Laser Light Module 01. This can be fitted to pistols or under the foregrips of H+K G36. Not certain why the U.K. decided to put it on the right side of the foregrip.

An A1 grip modified for the LLM 01. Trials use.

The current A2 grip with LLM 01 rail. This also has mounting points for other rails.

Extra long bolt shown below to fit LLM 01 kit to rifle.

All fitted to grip and ready to go.

The head mounted ITT PVS 14 currently issued to troops to compliment the LLM 01. The PVS 14 has no reticle of its own and can see the IR laser dot from the LLM 01 whereas the enemy without Image intensifiers cannot. Therefore one just places the dot on the target and pull the trigger without aiming the gun.

This double length rail from Sabre Defence allows you to put a sight of your choice in front of the PVS or MUM 14s using the weapon mount that comes in the kit. Pictures of this sighting system will appear here when I can get all the kit in one place again.
